The Spirited Thrifter

My name is Nicole. I’m a 41-year-old wife and mother of three awesome kids, aged 9, 7 and 4. I started style blogging in August 2012 after my husband lost his job and I discovered thrifting as an avenue for affordable fashion and retail therapy! He found another awesome job soon after, but I continued with my adventure of shopping second hand for myself for a full year and I’m not planning to stop any time soon!

Though I am missing my beloved Value Village here in Houston, I am not exactly suffering a lack of thrift shops.  Au contraire – there is a plethora of Goodwill stores, Family Thrift Centers, and lots of “little thrift” shops.  By little thrift, I mean smaller (though not always...

Building an Outfit

On the heels of a post about thrifting and in the midst of a 30-day closet purge seems like a good time to discuss how to put outfits together.  I appreciate fellow bloggers who are very thoughtful about this process – Adina at Blue Collar Red Lipstick is the Queen of Outfits, IMHO.  I tend...

Thrifting Therapy

By now, it should be a well established fact around these parts that thrifting is a 100% legit form of therapy. #canigetanamen  Lord knows I’ve needed a lot of it over the past several weeks.  I am very blessed to have met some wonderful people here in Houston including my new friend Mary w...

Don’t Be Precious
Posted
I should say “don’t be precious about the wrong things,” but that seems like a cumbersome title for a blog post.  I first started thinking about this last Saturday when I learned the sad news that my friend back in Canada, Stephanie, had passed away after a long, brave battle with can...

Self-Care Thrifting Tips

If you follow my spirited shenanigans on Instagram, you already know that I *might* have gone thrifting twice this week.  I had to.  I have been solo parenting and dealing with Texas homework and having a wee bit of adjustment difficulties.  This was not the first time I’ve gone thrifting a...

Musings on Moving

I saw something that made me cry the other day.  Do you want to know what it was? An orange leaf, an emblem of my “saudade.” The leaves in Houston, at least most of them, don’t change colour so I’m missing home – my glorious driveway and my very own autumn forest. I ...

The Time Has Come to Say Goodbye

Well, things have been leading up to this post.  The big move… the stress of everything… the change in my roles… the change in the weather… Yes, the time has come to say goodbye… to some clothes.  ;p  Did I have you worried?  If so, YESSSSS!  I was going for drama.  ...

Dressing For Me

Not counting the brief interruption to regular programming by Hurricane Harvey, our Houston lives are settling into a routine.  The kids are back in school, activities are underway, the house is unpacked albeit un-decorated but that will come with time.  I am in a new phase of life.  Fortunately,...

My First Thred Up
Posted
Back a couple of weeks ago while Hurricane Harvey was barely beginning and seemed merely like a reason to hunker down and snack, I found some secondhand stress relief by thrift shopping on-line using Thred Up for the very first time, if you can believe it.  Up until recently, Thred Up was not ava...
