Frugal Habits: Why?
I realized the other day that I kind of just jumped into this Frugal Habits series when I started writing more seriously on my blog. I didn’t take the time to explain why I think it’s so important to cultivate frugal habits and build them into your lifestyle. When you sit down and thi...

February Savings
February was an ok month for me financially. Not the best month I’ve ever had but certainly not the worst either. I did end up going over-budget, but it was only by $22, so I’m not going to sweat it. My savings rates were also lower in February than January but that was intentional. I...

Frugal Habits: Not Shopping
I feel like this is a really important frugal habit but one that has been really difficult for me to develop. Truth is, I live in a society where it is the norm to shop for everything, from personal enjoyment all the way down to meeting your basic needs.  And I feel like this has, at […]

Geriatric Social Work and Personal Finance Are Related How?
For those of you that don’t know, I work by day as a geriatric social worker (by night I write this blog, read a lot of books, and bake a lot of cookies). I absolutely love my job. Knowing that I am making a real and profound difference in people’s lives every day is incredibly […]

You know your frugality pays off when …

… you get to save an extra 5% of your January take-home pay simply because you had that money left over at the end of the month. That puts my total January savings rate up to 20% of my take-home pay! Go me!

Frugal Habits: Living Small
Posted
Aka: A love letter to my tiny bachelorette pad. I’ve lived in my tiny lovely bachelorette pad (approx. 450 sq ft) for close to three years now, and Jordan moved in with me right before Christmas. I know that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love living in a small space. I k...

Frugal Habits: Meal Planning
Posted
One of my most important frugal habits is meal planning. When I started to get more serious about my finances again this summer, one of my goals was to stop eating out. To do that, I knew I would have to get way better about following through on my plans to cook food at home. If I […]

A Frugal Halloween
Jordan and I had a lot of fun going out for Halloween last year and we wanted to do it again this year. However, we had an unpleasant reality check when we went shopping for costumes. They are expensive! We saw ones that would cost each of us easily over $50 for something we would […]

October Reflections and November Savings
Posted
I just finalized my November budget today. In addition to the 10% that’s automatically put into my work pension plan, I’m saving an extra 11.3% of my take-home (net) pay. It’s a bit lower than last month but I overspent a bit in October and needed to adjust things accordingly. T...

Why Frugality?
Posted
This is kind of a bigger question that I’ve been thinking about the answer to a lot lately: why frugality? I think that if someone is going to embrace a more frugal lifestyle, whatever that looks like, there needs to be a deeper motivation than simply spending less. I’m a very goal-or...

September

I am, dear readers, a terribly irregular writer. I’m sure you’ve noticed by now. It’s something I’m working on but clearly I still need more improvement. However, let’s move on to something more positive. Let’s talk about finances in September. So far, things a...

August Spending Challenge Review
Posted
So now that August is over and I’m back from my vacation, I am finally getting to sit down and write about how my August spending challenge went. Overall, I did ok. Not as well as I had hoped but ok. I came in under- or on-budget for everything that I had budgeted for (groceries, […]

August Spending Update
Posted
Well, I meant to do an update on my August spending challenge a lot sooner, but then life happened. I’ve spent the past two weeks processing getting engaged, celebrating my birthday, and seeing my family. It’s been a great month, but it means that this post is late. So, how am I doing...
