Communicating in the Crowded Post-Secondary Landscape

Communicating in the Crowded Post-Secondary Landscape

Starts:

Friday, October 21
11:30 AM

Ends:

Friday, October 21
1:00 PM

Join us for a discussion with three senior level communications professionals representing an array of post-secondary institutions in Edmonton who will be covering the challenges and opportunities of communicating in the crowded post-secondary landscape. This will include such topic areas as marketing and recruitment, managing change and innovation, as well as positioning and differentiating from the competition -- just to name a few.

Allan Linklater, MacEwan University

In his role with the Office of Communications and Marketing at MacEwan University, Allan is responsible for telling the MacEwan brand story in support of student recruitment and retention.

He's proud to head-up a dedicated and hard working team of six that is responsible for web content, social media, media relations, internal communications and issues management. The team's work is closely integrated with the institution's strategic priorities and marketing initiatives.

Allan has been with the university for longer than he cares to say, and during his time there has seen MacEwan evolve from a community college to an accredited degree granting university.

Alison Turner, University of Alberta

Alison Turner is the Acting Director of Marketing and Communications at the University of Alberta. Prior to joining the University of Alberta in 2013 as Communications Manager, she served as Communications Director for the Edmonton Arts Council and Executive Director for the Film & Video Arts Society of Alberta (FAVA). In addition, Alison was an instructor at MacEwan University in the Arts & Cultural Management program for close to three years and has served on numerous boards related to the arts.

Dan VanKeeken, The King's University

Dan VanKeeken, APR, is a senior, accredited and award-winning public affairs, media, government and community relations leader, consultant, educator and fund raiser with more than 35 years' experience in a variety of settings and sectors in two provinces. Since 2011, he has been the vice-president for Institutional Advancement at The King's University in Edmonton, responsible for the public relations and marketing, alumni relations and fundraising teams. Prior to that, he has held senior communications positions with a number of organizations, including the City of Edmonton, NAIT, Alberta Motor Association, NOVA Gas Transmission and Alberta Power Limited. He is also the longest serving instructor in the Public Relations program at MacEwan University: now over 25 years. He has a Bachelor of Professional Arts degree in Communications from Athabasca University, where is also a tutor, has lived in Edmonton since 1988 and is sadly still a Leafs fan, having been born and raised in "the centre of the known universe," Toronto, Ontario.
