RCMP; Dr. Tania Kajner, City of Edmonton; and Debra deWaal, former Calgary Police officer and owner of Safe & Sound Training & Consulting Ltd. as they share their career and leadership journeys and join in a discussion on how and why personal safety has become an important issue for everyone, especially for women. Panel Moderator: Nancy Carlson, Global News AnchorPanelist Profiles:Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer, "K" Division, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)Deputy Commissioner Ryan has been a member of the RCMP for over 31 years. She began her career in law enforcement after graduating from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She has extensive operational police experience at the local, national and international levels, leading major investigations targeting organized crime groups involved in a myriad of criminal activities including drugs, proceeds of crime and organized crime. In November 2013, she was appointed Commanding Officer for "K" Division and promoted as the 23rd Commanding Officer for the RCMP in Albera. D/Commr. Ryan was elected as the President of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police on April 30, 2014, a two-year term position with the organization.Debra deWaalDebra deWaal is a former Calgary Police Officer and is now the owner of Safe & Sound Safety Training & Consulting Ltd. Debra's 10 year career with CPS included 3 years undercover work in auto theft, stolen property and vice. Debra also spent numerous years working on the street as a uniformed officer. Debra is a professional member of Canadian Association of Professional Speakers and has been developing and facilitating Mental Toughness, Personal Safety and Conflict Management Training to Canadian citizens since 1995. Dr. Tania Kajner (new panelist), City of EdmontonTania is a Social Planner with the City of Edmonton, working on the City's initiative to address gender-based violence and sexual assault. Her engagement with community organizations over the past two decades has centered on research, learning, and strategies in support of gender equity, particularly in relationship to violence, poverty, and leadership. Tania's research critically examines community engagement and higher education in Canada, exploring the intersections of scholarship, community action, and difference.
