The purpose of this event is to allow you to roll up your sleeves and see what's happening with our review of the Mature Neighbourhood Overlay - the rules that guide development in Edmonton's mature neighbourhoods. We are at the beginning of the process to review these rules and we need your help to make sure we tackle the right things.

What to Expect

This event is a workshop format, so we are planning for you to spend 3 hours with us, from 9 am to noon. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. As a group, we will explore three things:

Neighbourhood character: What do you like about mature neighbourhoods? What rules need to be in place to make sure we keep our favourite things?

Mature Neighbourhood Overlay rules: What does the MNO need to be and do to accommodate infill in ways that feel good?

Development process: Where are the areas for improvement in the development review and approval process?

Who Should Come

This workshop is set up to allow people to dig into the opportunities and challenges of the MNO. You might be a citizen watching your neighbourhood change and want to help shape it. You might have first-hand knowledge of the MNO rules because you have built a new home, or live beside one and are worried the current rules are not good enough. You might be a builder or developer, or thinking of building or developing. You might be a part of a community organization that cares about what happens in our mature neighbourhoods. Everyone is welcome.

The review of the Mature Neighbourhood Overlay (MNO) is important to citizens across Edmonton. The public engagement program to support the MNO review is an inclusive process with a variety of engagement opportunities planned or in progress.

The goals of the MNO review are to:

improve the MNO as a tool that supports suitable new development in our mature neighbourhoods

reduce the need for variances during the permitting process by re-evaluating regulations for mature and established neighbourhoods

improve the development approvals process and provide clarity for citizens and builders
