The "Petrykivka" style of painting is a remarkable artistic phenomena of Ukrainian culture, and a characteristic feature of Ukrainian decorative folk art. Tradition has it that Petrykivka was founded by a group os Cossacks in the eighteenth century. Early decorative paintings in Petrykivka were mostly murals on the walls of peasant houses. Besides great popularity in Ukraine, Petrykivka gained worldwide recognition in 2013, as it was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
