Background
ACT Alberta received funding from Status of Women Canada to develop a Community Action Plan to prevent and reduce sex trafficking of women and girls in Edmonton. This is a collaborative project guided by a Core Team of community stakeholders. We began the project with a comprehensive needs assessment of the community including an analysis of Edmonton's demographics, a literature review and a community-based participatory research study with front-line serving agencies, community groups and women with lived experiences. We used the information gathered in the needs assessment to develop a Community Action Plan with practical strategies for tackling sex trafficking in our community. Core Team members include:
ACT Alberta
ASSIST Community Services Centre
Centre to End all Sexual Exploitation (CEASE)
City of Edmonton- Community Services
City of Edmonton Councillor Scott McKeen
Edmonton Immigrant Services Association (EISA)
Edmonton Police Service (EPS)
Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW)
REACH Edmonton
Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE)
YWCA of Edmonton

Human Trafficking Training Challenge
Leading up to this workshop, we are challenging organizations to commit at least one staff person to take a free, online human trafficking training. The BC Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons (BCOCTIP) has a free online training that provides a basic overview of human trafficking in Canada, including how to identify, support and refer trafficking cases. The training takes about 4-7 hours to complete and can be completed at the participant's own pace. We think this is a great resource and we'd like to challenge Edmonton organizations, businesses and citizens to try it out. Here is how it works:
Access the training here: http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/octip/training.htm
For organizations, commit at least one staff to complete the training before June 11th, 2015. The organization or business with the most staff to complete the training will win a prize
Let us when you have completed the training by completing the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YVMZFQ2, or e-mail us here: trainingchallenge@actalberta.org. We welcome your feedback!
We will publish the names of participating organizations and businesses on our website
