Spanish heat and gypsy passion arrive on the Royal Opera stage with this darkly passionate and sumptuously exotic reading of one of the world's favourite operas. 19th-century Seville is brought alive in this dramatic story which tells of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery Gypsy, Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen's love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. Bizet's irresistible score drives the tragedy forward, in this powerful landmark staging of a musical masterpiece.
