The City of Edmonton has launched a new pilot program to encourage citizens to green their neighbourhoods.

Through the You're Gonna Love Green: Neighbourhood Action Program, citizens can learn about Edmonton's environmental vision and find inspiration to take action in their own communities.

"The more that residents learn about Edmonton's environmental challenges and opportunities, the easier it becomes to make individual as well as community changes," says Mark Brostrom, director of the City's Environmental Strategies. "Community-based environmental programs are foundational pieces of larger sustainability efforts."

The Neighbourhood Action Program is a pilot project that will educate citizens about The Way We Green, the City's environmental strategic plan, and introduce the concept of sustainability. Those who attend the interactive learning sessions are eligible for a total of $20,000 of small grants, specifically for their neighbourhood. They can apply through local non-profit groups (including community leagues), schools and places of worship such as mosques and churches.

The program will initially be piloted in four neighbourhoods, based on demographics and location. Boyle/McCauley, Old Strathcona and Greenview/Hillview have been chosen so far. If the pilot is successful, the City will roll out the program city-wide in the following year.
