Ends:

Saturday, February 01

"We go to the square to discover that we love life outside it, and to discover that our love for life is resistance."

Amnesty Edmonton is excited to team up once again with Metro Cinema to host a screening of the 2014 Oscar-nominated documentary The Square, an intense look at the Egyptian revolution through the eyes of the young activists on the ground in Tahrir Square, the symbolic centre of the movement. The film currently has 100% positive critical review (according to review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes) and it is nominated for the 2014 Academy Award for Best Documentary.

The film's description (from The Square's website):

"The Egyptian Revolution has been an ongoing rollercoaster over the past two and a half years. Through the news, we only get a glimpse of the bloodiest battle, an election, or a million man march. At the beginning of July 2013, we witnessed the second president deposed within the space of three years.

The Square is an immersive experience, transporting the viewer deeply into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling through multiple forces, in the fight to create a society of conscience."

After the film, we're lucky to have two excellent speakers who will provide the audience with an update on the developments in Egypt since the film's events, as well as answer questions. Our speakers will be:

- Dr. Magdy El-Shamma, Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and African Studies & History and Classics at the U of A who specializes in the history of the Middle East;
- Dr. Mojitaba Mahdavi, Assistant Professor, Middle Eastern & African Studies Program and Department of Political Science who specializes in Middle Eastern politics

As well, there will be an Amnesty table in the lobby where we will have letters to sign for actions that Amnesty International is currently working on in Egypt. It should be a great night, we hope you can make it out, and please, invite your friends!

If you can't make this screening of the Square but still want to see it, don't worry! Check http://www.metrocinema.org/ for more upcoming screen times.
