WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY?

This political documentary follows performance artist Reverend Billy Talen and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they go on a cross-country mission to save the United States from the “Shopocalypse” – the end of mankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt. Staging interventions in shopping malls and a corporate exorcism in Times Square, the group attempts to start a worldwide movement that will stall the bad buying habits of holiday consumers.

USA, 2009, 91 minutes, rated PG

SMOKE

Harvey Keitel stars in this classic indie drama as Auggie, the owner of a Brooklyn cigar store around which several connected stories and characters take refuge. These include a widowed writer, a troubled teenager looking for his father, and Auggie’s former girlfriend, who arrives unexpectedly with a pregnant daughter in tow. From director Wayne Wang and novelist Paul Auster, “if there's such a thing as an essential Brooklyn film, it might well be Smoke.” – Wall Street Journal

USA, 1995, 112 minutes, rated 14A

FRANCES HA

Frances (Greta Gerwig), an apprentice for a New York dance company, is struggling to make ends meet, both financially and emotionally. From co-writer Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach, Frances Ha is a bittersweet comedy about city life, creative ambition, and the reality of making it all work.
