Where The Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are was directed by Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) and is based on Maurice Sedak’s 1963 children’s of the same title. The story follows Max, a 9 year old boy, who becomes king of the “Wild Things” on an imaginary island. Jonze combined animatronics, CGI, and performers in costumes to visually recreate the “Wild Things” creatures. The film features the voices of the late James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker, and Catherine O’Hara. 99 minutes (2009) PG

Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events

This film is an adaptation of three Lemony Snicket books: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, and The Wide Window. The film stars Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, a mysterious theater troupe actor who attempts to steal the inherited fortune that was left to his recently orphaned cousins. The film also stars Meryl Streep and Catherine O’Hara, and is narrated by Jude Law. Brad Silberling (Casper, Land of the Lost) directed the film. 108 minutes (2004) PG

A Christmas Carol

Alastair Sim stars as Scrooge in this 1951 adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic and most best- loved Christmas tales of all time, A Christmas Carol. Strangely, the film was premiered in on Halloween night, rather than during the Christmas season, at the Guild Theater in New York. Despite it being the most popular films in Britain in 1952, the New York reviews and box office sales were a disappointment because the movie was reviewed as “too grim and sombre”. 86 minutes (1951) G

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This film is a wacky and stylized adaptation of the classic 1964 children’s book by British author Roald Dahl - as wacky and stylized as only Tim Burton can get! Of course Burton chose Johnny Depp to play Willy Wonka, who based the look for his character on the Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour. The film includes 40 squirrels (who were trained every day for 10 weeks to sit on a stool, tap, and then open a walnut), 192,000 gallons of faux melted candy, and plenty of CGI.115 minutes (2005) PG
