Winter's Bone



Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best Supporting Actor (John Hawkes) Winter’s Bone is based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell. Jennifer Lawrence plays seventeen-year old Ree Dolly, who with dogged determination, attempts to keep her family of a near-catatonic mother and two younger siblings together as she searches for her absent meth-making father in the dirt poor rural Ozarks. 100 minutes (2010) 14A

Based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, this film was a box-office phenomenon when released last year. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, the film takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where teenagers are forced to participate in the Hunger Games, an annual televised fight to the death. 142 minutes (2012) 14A

Silver Linings Playbook



This David O. Russell- directed film is based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name. Bradley Cooper plays Pat Solitano, a former teacher suffering from bipolar disorder, who, after release from a mental institution moves back in with his parents and attempts to reconcile with his ex-wife. Eventually he meets a young widow (Jennifer Lawrence in an Oscar-winning role) with problems of her own and a plan to solve them. Robert De Niro also stars as Pat’s father , a staunch long-time Philadelphia Eagles fan with a few problems as well. 122 minutes (2012) 14A

X-Men-First Class



Jennifer Lawrence is mutant superhero “Raven” in this film, the fifth installment of the X-Men franchise based on the Marvel comic series. The film acts as a prequel , showing the origins of the mutant superheroes who are enlisted to help the U.S. government during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon also star, among others. 132 minutes (2011) PG

Cocoon



Cocoon is loosely based on the book Cocoon by David Saperstein. It was directed by Ron Howard and stars Don Ameche who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Art Selwyn. This is a funny and touching film about a group of seniors who discover the “fountain of youth” in a pool that is being used to hide alien pods. The seniors enjoy their new-found youthful vigor but not without a cost for they are forced to make a life changing decision. 117 minutes (1985) PG-13

Contact



Contact is based on Carl Sagan’s book by the same name. The film stars Jodi Foster, Matthew McConaughey, James Woods, John Hurt, and Tom Skerritt. Foster plays Ellie Arroway, a woman who has devoted her life to the belief that there is life on other planets. She is ostracized by her superiors at the National Science Foundation, and eventually cut off from her research, until she receives a message from space. This intense story follows Arroway’s obsession and odyssey into the unknown. 150 minutes (1997) PG

2010: The Year We Make Contact



This film is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey and is based on the novel 2010: Odyssey Two by Arthur C. Clarke. This film stars Roy Scheider, John Lithgow and Helen Mirren. Scheider plays Heywood Floyd, an ex-employee of the National Council on Astronautics. After being blamed for the failure of Discovery One’s mission to Jupiter (2001: Space Odyssey), he joins a joint U.S-Soviet expedition to Jupiter to learn what happened to the Discovery. 116 minutes (1984) PG

This film is based on H.G. Wells classic of the same name. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Cruise. Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a father who must find a way to fight for the safety of his life and that of his children once earth has been invaded by alien tripod fighting machines. 116 minutes (2005) PG-13

I, Robot



I, Robot is based on Issac Asimov’s short story of the same name. The year is 2035. Will Smith plays Del Spooner, a techno-phobic cop, investigating a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot. Spooner won’t rest until he finds out the truth behind the corporation who manufactured the robots or is it the robots who are manufacturing the truth? 115 minutes (2004) PG-13
