 on Friday\, April 6 (Good Friday)\n\n Friday\, April 13\, 2:00pm The Sound
of Music\n\nThis multi-Oscar winning film has been a family favorite for

Plummer. Julie plays a nun who becomes a governess to the seven childre

t everybody remembers. Who can forget Judy Garland&#8217\;s Dorothy in he
r quest to the find the wizard in the magical land of Oz? With a terrific
cast and a rousing score (including &#8220\;Somewhere Over the Rainbow&#8
221\;)\, this film has become\, according to the Library of Congress\, the

Wizard authorities\, led by the nasty new Defence Against the Dark Arts t

 Library\nTEDTalks Discussion Series are approximately 45 minutes...bring y
our lunch!\n\n January 12th\, 2012: Jill Bolte Taylor's stroke of insight
\nJill Bolte Taylor talks about her &#8220\;stroke of insight&#8221\;. One
morning\, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor's brain exploded. As a brai
n scientist\, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. As h
er brain functions shut down one by one Bolte analyzes the event with the
clarity and dispassion of a scientist\, and discovers the &#8220\;life for
ce power of the universe&#8221\; that resides in every human being.\n\nNeu
roscientist Jill Bolte Taylor talks about her &#8220\;stroke of insight&#8
221\;. One morning\, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor's brain exploded.
As a brain scientist\, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own st
roke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion\, sp
 eech\, memory\, self-awareness... \nAmazed to find herself alive\, Taylor
spent eight years recovering her ability to think\, walk and talk. She has
become a spokesperson for stroke recovery and for the possibility of comi
ng back from brain injury stronger than before. In her case\, although the
stroke damaged the left side of her brain\, her recovery unleashed a torr
ent of creative energy from her right. From her home base in Indiana\, she
now travels the country on behalf of the Harvard Brain Bank as the &quot\
;Singin' Scientist.&quot\;\n&quot\;How many brain scientists have been abl
e to study the brain from the inside out? I've gotten as much out of this
experience of losing my left mind as I have in my entire academic career.&
 quot\;\n \n February 9th\, 2012: How games make kids smarter\nDo kids the
se days have short attention spans or does the world just move too slowly?
Can playing video games make you more productive? Gabe Zichermann argue
s that games are making kids better problem-solvers\, and will make us bet
ter at everything from driving to multi-tasking. He suggests that today's
video games are making children smarter&#8212\;and we should all embrace
gamification.\n\nGabe Zichermann is an entrepreneur and author whose work
centers on gamification&#8212\;and the power of games to help engage peopl
e and build strong organizations and communities. In 2010\, he chaired th
e Gamification summit\, a conference dedicated to gamification and &#8220\
;engagement mechanics.&#8221\; Zichermann is an avid blogger on the subje
ct and author of &#8220\;Game-Based Marketing\,&#8221\; which examines the
innovative trend of using game mechanics to engage and build a customer b
 ase.\n \n March 8th\, 2012: James H Kunstler dissects suburbia\nIn James
Howard Kunstler's view\, public spaces should be inspired centers of civic
life and the physical manifestation of the common good. Instead\, he argu
es\, what we have in North America is a nation of places not worth caring
about. Given Edmonton&#8217\;s current push for re-vitalizing throughout t
he city\, what can we learn from his compelling presentation?\nPlease note
this video presentation contains strong language.\n\nJames Howard Kunstle
r calls suburban sprawl &quot\;the greatest misallocation of resources the
world has ever known.&quot\; His arguments bring a new lens to urban deve
lopment\, drawing clear connections between physical spaces and cultural v
itality. His confrontational approach and propensity for doomsday scenario
s make Kunstler a lightning rod for controversy and critics. But his magni
ficent rants are underscored with logic and his books are widely read\, pa
rticularly by architectural critics and urban planners.\n\n April 12\, 201
2: Barry Schwartz on the paradox of choice &#8220\;The secret to happines
s is low expectations.&#8221\; (Barry Schwartz)\n\nPsychologist Barry Schw
artz asks &#8220\;why it is that societies of great abundance&#8212\;where
individuals are offered more freedom of choice (personal\, professional\,
material) than ever before&#8212\;are now witnessing a near-epidemic of d
 epression?&#8221\; \n\n\nSchwartz\, author of six books\, Professor of S
ocial Theory and Social Action at Swarthmore College\, teaches and writes
on the theory of decision making\, learning processes\, the creation of va
lues and work satisfaction.\n\n May 10\, 2012: Jeffrey Kluger: The Siblin
g Bond\nWere you the favorite child\, the wild child or the middle child?
At TEDxAsheville\, Jeffrey Kluger explores the profound life-long bond bet
ween brothers and sisters\, and the influence of birth order\, favoritism
and sibling rivalry.\n\nA senior editor of science and technology reportin
g at TIME magazine\, Jeffrey Kluger has written books on a wide range of s
cience subjects\, including the Polio vaccine\, Apollo 13 and the effect o
 f sibling relationships.\n\n\n \n\n\n \n June 14\, 2012: Garth Lenz: The
True Cost of Oil\nWhat does environmental devastation actually look like?
Canadian photographer Garth Lenz shares shocking photos of the Alberta Ta
r Sands mining project and the beautiful (and vital) ecosystems that are u
nder threat. One of these important ecosystmes is the Boreal wildnerness t
hat surrounds the Alberta Tar sands. \n\nGarth Lenz&#8217\; touring exhibi
tion\, &#8220\;The True Cost of Oil&#8221\;\, has played a major part in t
he fight against Alberta Tar Sands Mining. Garth Lenz&#8217\;s photographs

e series with something for everyone and is devoted to ideas worth spreadi
ng. Watch a TEDTalk and then participate in a discussion that might have y
ou changing your attitude\, your life and even the world. TEDTalk dicussio
 ns are approximately 45 minutes long. October 2011 - May 2012 | 12:15pm a
nd 2:30pm\nCentre for Reading and the Arts - Main Floor Stanley A. Milner
Garth Lenz&#8217\;s photographs
capture the detailed reality of what happens when a pristine landscape is
confronted by an industrial project. His work as a photojournalist has wo
n him top awards at Pris de la Photographie Paris and the International Ph
otography Awards. He is also a fellow of the International League of Conse
rvation Photographers. His solo exhibition featuring the Alberta Tar Sands
 \, &#8220\;The True Cost of Oil&#8221\; premiered in 2011.\n\n \n

DESCRIPTION:Downtown Docs is a new series highlighting some of the best in
documentary filmmaking. We feature titles from Canada's very own National
Film Board (NFB)\, but we'll also screen international classics drawn from
our collections. Presented in the Stanley A. Milner Library Theatre\, Dow
ntown Docs aims to showcase the art and personal vision behind the documen
tary. Visit our Film Series page to watch trailers\n\n Thursday\, May 17\,
6:30 pmBeing Elmo: A Puppeteer's JourneyWinning all sorts of international
film awards and multiple &#8220\;thumbs up&#8221\; reviews from critics\,
Being Elmo: A Puppeteer&#8217\;s Journey is an affectionate portrait of K
evin Clash\, the man who gave life to a fuzzy\, cuddly monster. Growing up
as an awkward kid in Baltimore\, Kevin began fashioning puppet creatures
out of his father&#8217\;s coat. Eventually he&#8217\;d make his way to a
different neighbourhood\, one centered on Sesame Street. The film becomes
a treat for muppet enthusiasts\, who get some behind-the-scenes glimpses
of the Jim Henson world. Whoopi Goldberg narrates this relationship story
of Kevin and Elmo.\n\n(2011/76 minutes)\n \nVisit our Film Series page t

B comes this provocative and critical examination of the mining industry i
n Canada. The documentary emphasizes the environmental costs\, health prob
lems and financial burdens encountered while companies become ever more pr
ofitable. Directors Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie use striking im
ages\, rare archival footage\, interviews\, and pointed social commentary
to raise an alarm. The Hole Story takes us from Sudbury nickel to Timmins
