In 1911 Monet's adored wife died, plunging the artist into deep mourning. A year later he began going blind. His eldest son fell ill and died of syphilis, and his other son was sent to war. At the same time, a new generation of artists, led by Picasso and Matisse, were dazzling the art world and expressing disgust with Monet's treasured Impressionism. Fighting self-doubt, depression, and age, Monet constructed a massive new studio to accommodate the gigantic canvases that would, he hoped, revive him. Author Ross King reveals a complex, human, and intimate Claude Monet than has ever been portrayed, and firmly places his water lily project among the greatest achievements in the history of art.

Presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of Alberta.
