Journalist Interrupted: Towards a blueprint for a new free press

Starts:

Thursday, May 26
7:30 PM

Ends:

Thursday, May 26
9:30 PM

If mainstream media outlets wither and die, what happens to journalism? What is lost? What might be gained? What journalistic enterprises are already moving to fill the gap, and what can we expect to arise in the future? What needs to happen to make sure the good that journalism does continues to exist outside of the institutions where it has resided?

These and other questions will be addressed in a panel moderated by Brian Gorman, assistant professor of communication studies at MacEwan University and author of Crash to Paywall: Canadian Newspapers and the Great Disruption.

Panelists:

Brandi Morin, Edmonton bureau chief for APTN

Linda Solomon Wood, CEO of Observer Media Group and editor-in-chief of The National Observer

Kelly Toughill, director of the School of Journalism at University of King's College in Halifax

Karen Unland, entrepreneurial journalist and founder of Seen and Heard in Edmonton

Whether you are a working journalist, a former journalist, a blogger, a podcaster, a student, a communications pro or simply a citizen interested in how to create an informed public, you will come away with a better understanding of the current challenges and new ways to imagine what comes next.

Doors open at 7 p.m. A reception with light refreshments will follow.
