An alien spacecraft fleeing the human authorities mistakenly leaves one of its passengers behind. Alone and afraid in suburban America, he befriends a similarly alienated boy named Elliot who, assisted by his siblings, helps E.T. thwart the menacing establishment and make his way home. There are shenanigans with wigs and Reese's Pieces, and stunning special effects, but it's the film's message about friendship and love that resonates across generations.
