Hosted by MacEwan University in Edmonton.
For creative industry professionals, the goal is to connect with a target audience, to captivate with a message that will inspire action, encourage a change in thinking and leave a lasting impression. But the way we communicate is changing and the process of telling a story has become much more complex. Join a discussion of how cultural shifts, technological advances and the growing desire for authenticity, immediacy and accuracy across all media will influence future content consumption and the nature of communication. Connect with creative professionals who are exploring new ways to engage in this environment and see how design thinking continues to influence audiences through the power of narrative.
Panelists:
Farah Assir, UX Designer at The New York Times
Farah is a UX designer living in Brooklyn who came to New York City from Beirut with bright eyes and no specific plan. Her mission is to help people make things clear, simple, and impactful through design. She worked on a creating new digital products at the New York Times — most recently NYT Now and the Times' Cooking product. Outside work she rides bikes, does yoga, and tries to eat as much kale as possible.
Jake Barton, Founder of Local Projects
Presentation: How are memories inscribed? What factors inform how audiences connect with and understand design? Jake will share insight from past projects to illustrate how memorable and meaningful design is the key to creating impactful stories and experiences.
Jake Barton uses architecture, technology and storytelling to create experiences where visitors learn by doing. The firm he founded, Local Projects, has created landmark media design projects like the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and Gallery One at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Local Projects has won every top design award including the National Design Award, a Clio, and was named second of the top ten most innovative design firms by Fast Company Magazine for its redefinition of emotional storytelling. Local Projects has expanded its clients to include corporate innovation centres, public memorials, retail environments, libraries, and attractions. Clients include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Eisenhower Memorial with Frank Gehry, StoryCorps, GE, Johnson & Johnson, AMNH, Tech Museum, and Microsoft.
Elizabeth Laferrière, Art Director
Montreal-born Elizabeth Laferrière completed a D.C.S. in Graphic Arts before doing her Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design at the UQÀM, including a semester abroad at ESAG Penninghen in Paris. Art Director working freelance with a lot of different people, she constantly has hundreds of projects in mind. She creates still and moving images that encompass her poetic, sensitive and spontaneous vision. She plays around with typography, collage and video, and aspires to move towards set design where she can develop a more comprehensive approach. Her constant need to learn has brought her to collaborate as much as possible. "We learn thanks to others." With her passion for art and go-getter personality, Elizabeth sails through her numerous projects with one goal in mind – tell stories.

Julian Brown RGD, On The Chase!
Julian is the designer and entrepreneur behind On The Chase!, an award-winning motion design studio. In its first five years, OTC! has collaborated with diverse clients ranging from retail giant Shoppers Drug Mart to award-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley. Julian has been profiled in industry magazines Applied Arts and Design Edge as a rising young talent. He is a graduate of the York/Sheridan Design Degree program in Toronto.
