Join us for a media event to welcome members of the Lummi Nation and the Tseil Waututh Nation, at one of their last stops before arriving at their final destination in Beaver Lake, Alberta.

In August and September 2014, the Lummi Nation's House of Tears Carvers, who have created a tradition of carving and delivering totem poles to areas struck by disaster or otherwise in need of hope, healing and protection, will deliver an 20-foot red cedar totem pole, to the sacred territory of the Beaver Lake Cree First Nation in Alberta in the tar sands. The totem pole will travel 10,000 Kms over three weeks through South Dakota, Montana, Washington, BC and Alberta, stopping in communities affected by coal, tar sands, Bakken oil extraction, shipment and storage.

The goals of the journey are to raise public awareness of our shared responsibility to protect the land, the waters and the peoples and to discuss the environmental issues caused by the massive fossil fuel extraction, transport and storage proposals in the Pacific Northwest. It will help unify the work of First Nations, tribes, environmental organizations and residents and gather enough voices to make a critical mass of concerned citizens, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, that cannot be ignored.

The journey is about sharing Indigenous traditional values and knowledge and creating a cross-cultural dialogue with the broader community about what's at stake with fossil fuel extraction, export, and consumption.

At free community events, all will be invited to experience and help carry the message by seeing and touching this indigenous, activist art form. The totem speaks to the heart of the matter and the moral conscience of culturally diverse communities.
