In 2003, the Ice on Whyte festival officially began because a few creative individuals wanted to showcase ice carving in Edmonton.

A group of local sculptors and the Old Strathcona Business Association worked together to create some amazing ice carvings in McIntyre Park and people came to enjoy the magical works of art. Very shortly the festival outgrew McIntyre Park and moved to the park, commonly know as Festival Park, on 85 Avenue and 104 Street.

In 2009, the first international ice carving competiton took place and artists continue to come from around the world to create incredible works of art from frozen water.

Ice on Whyte has grown into Edmonton's premier winter festival and now features an international ice carving competition and 10 days of interactive outdoor winter activities. Visitors enjoy beautiful ice sculptures, a giant ice slide, a children's play area, live musical entertainment, and ice carving workshops for school groups and much more.

Ice on Whyte is presented by the Ice on Whyte Festival Society, and has successfully grown through the continued support of many community minded businesses and organizations, and the dedication of volunteers and artists.

In October of 2012, the Ice on Whyte Festival won an Alberta Tourism Award in the Alberta Pride Category!

The festival celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013. Over 50,000 visitors joined the festivities and came to watch the amazing drumming, fire and ice show on the closing day of the festival.

Join us in 2014 for 10 days of outdoor winter fun, explore a world of ice and snow sculptures and everything else the festival has to offer.
