Canoe Theatre Festival: A Western
Sunday, January 27
Sunday, January 27
Welcome to Canoe Theatre Festival number 6! Six years feels like a good start.
We're proud about how much of the world's theatre Workshop West has been able to bring to Edmonton in Canoe. Artists have come here from Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, England, New Zealand and so far, four provinces! Local artists who've played the festival have also done some travelling to Toronto, New York, Vancouver, Montreal, Whitehorse, Ottawa, Albuquerque, Melbourne...Calgary.
This year Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour speaks directly to you from Tehran his wild, experimental White Rabbit Red Rabbit. Victoria Melody will transport you to Britain's industrial north to dance to the real Oldies with the locals in Northern Soul. In A Western you'll appropriate the classic American story with the UK company Action Hero you'll cheat at poker and draw your six shooter (OK, your thumb and forefinger) in Texas, or Brighton, or maybe at the New City Legion Saloon.
Edmonton's own artists are presenting you great theatre fun for adults only. Send in the Girls Burlesque brings us a new, even more daring rendition of The Tudor Queens, their moving, intelligent expose of the wives of Henry VIII. Punctuate! Theatre's Vice Versa may be a clown performance, but the trip you'll take to the edge of the cliff with Tonk and Fozby won't be with the clowns from your birthday party!
Mary Walsh is another Canadian with a big edge is. Her iconic Marg Delahunty will ambush us all with the poignancy and humour in Dancing With Rage. For one show only, Mary will take us on a journey across a Canada that is sure to surprise.
Sizzling, enticing, alluring, surprising, stunning spectacle. Theatre That Rocks The Boat.
See you in the theatre!
