Ends:

Suicide is a silent issue that affects thousands of people each year. In fact, more people in Alberta die by suicide than motor vehicle accidents each year. Whether you're a survivor of suicide, know someone who has lost a loved one to suicide or an advocate who wants to affect change, we invite you to help us Lift the Silence on September 9. Suicide IS preventable and your participation at this event supports survivors, prevention and hope. Suicide facts: -In 2008, there were 8,575 suicide attempts in Alberta. This does not include unreported attempts. -Worldwide, suicide ranks among the three leading causes of death among those aged 15-44 years (WHO, 2010). -For every suicide loss, an average of 6 people suffer intense grief. This translates to approx. 6 million people worldwide actively experiencing loss and grief as a result of suicide at any given time
