This iconic film is based on the novel by Alan Le May.

June 17: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 123 minutes (1962) (b&w) PG
Another classic western from the John Ford-John Wayne team with added bonus star James Stewart. Stewart is an elderly U.S. senator returning to a small town to attend the funeral of a local rancher (John Wayne). Through flashback, we learn how Wayne helped Stewart, then a fledgling small town lawyer, deal with a gang of bullying outlaws led by Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance. Based on a short story by Dorothy M. Johnson, this film contains the famous line: "This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

June 24: True Grit 110 minutes (2010) 14A
This recent Coen brothers film is considered to be a more faithful adaptation of the Charles Portis novel than the 1969 version starring John Wayne shown earlier this month (June 3). This time around Jeff Bridges is in the starring role of U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, with Hailee Steinfeld as the young Mattie Ross and Matt Damon replaces Glen Campbell as Texas Ranger La Boeuf. They join forces to track down killer Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). The film was nominated for ten Oscars at last year's Academy Awards.

Visit our Film Series page to watch trailers

Call Norm Frizzell at 780-944-5383 for more information or e-mail: nfrizzell@epl.ca
