In the summer of 1992, a group of U of A graduates filled with passion and drive formed Hothouse, an industrial design collective. By late 1994, the collective spun into two new design forces, Hothouse Design Studio Inc. and Pure Design Ltd. Over the next 10 years, the companies competed for market share and both succeeded in producing award winning, innovative, functional furniture and home furnishings in Edmonton for international markets.

Together, at their peak, Hothouse and Pure Design employed 75 people, operated production facilities totaling 65,000 square feet, and shipped their products throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Japan. Hothouse also operated its own local retail outlet, while Pure Design actively collaborated with other contemporary designers including Dutch designer Richard Hutten and fellow Canadians Karim Rashid, Scot Laughton and Douglas Coupland.

After 18 years since its inception, the original group of eight is returning to their roots to celebrate their journey in design and debut new works.
