The Science of Sleep (2006)

Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal), an aspiring artist, returns home after the death of his father. Dealing with his grief, mundane job, and burgeoning attraction to his neighbour (Charlotte Gainsbourg), Stephane also suffers from the inability to distinguish between his sleeping and waking life. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michael Gondry creates another visually witty and technically ingenious film that explores the instability of desire, relationships, and consciousness itself. Lori Walter will facilitate the discussion after the film.

Lori Walter is a library assistant at the Edmonton Public Library, and holds an M.A. in English from the University of Victoria.

The Company (2003)

One of Robert Altman's last films, The Company is a composition of stories about the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, with most of the dancers played by their real-life members. Also starring Neve Campbell and Malcolm McDowell, the film blends dance performances and bittersweet drama. Paul Matwychcuk will discuss how Altman departs from his usual "ensemble-style" of filmmaking and makes the dance troupe its own collective character.

Paul Matwychuk is the general manager of Newest Press. He reviews DVDs on CBC Radio and on his blog THE MOVIEGOER.
