While graffiti, skate-boarding, parkour and the illicit adventures of
urban explorers may transgress civic rules and boundaries, they all
contribute to the dynamic fabric of our city. These practices recreate
urban space as ever-changing and constantly undergoing transformation.
More importantly, they make the city a more beautiful and more supple
place. Few realize that these activities have a long history that can
be traced to the European Situationists, the early Czech avant-garde
and as far back as the 18th century when artists presented abandoned
ruins through the lens of the picturesque.
This evening of films and talk will explore the links between diverse urban practices and their potential to transform the city.
